Pre-treatment
-
Schedule your injection at a time when minor swelling or bruising will not disrupt your social obligations. Each time you are treated, outcomes may vary.
-
Discontinue the use of blood-thinning products for 10 days prior to treatment, if approved by your primary care provider. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil), naproxen, Aleve, fish oil, St. John's Wort, flax, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, garlic, Ginkgo Biloba, ginseng, etc. Alcohol is also to be avoided 24 hours pre- or post-injectable treatment, as it is also a blood thinner.
-
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, Niacin supplement, high-sodium foods, high sugar foods, refined carbohydrates, spicy foods and cigarettes 24-48 hours before and after your treatment. These items may contribute to increased swelling or irritation.
-
Consider taking Arnica, anatural supplement to help minimize bruising.
-
Please notify your provider if you have any history of cold sores, as we will consider pre-medicating with an antiviral prescription prior to injections.
-
Cancel your appointment if you have any open sores in the treatment area.
-
Any injection introduces the risk for infection. We will delay injectables if you:
-
Have had any infection, cold, virus, or flu in the past 30 days.
-
Have had any dental procedures in the past 2 weeks or are anticipating dental procedures or cleanings in the next 2 weeks.
-
Have had any immunizations in the past 2 weeks or if you’re anticipating immunizations.
-
Have had any tattooing or permanent makeup within the past 2 weeks.
-
-
You may not receive dermal fillers if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any open sores including active acne in the areas to be treated.
-
Please arrive to your appointment with a clean face, free of makeup.
-
It is recommended to discontinue Retin-A 2-3 days before treatment to avoid any increased redness and irritation.
-
It is recommended that you wait at least 2 weeks to have dermal filler treatments performed if you have previously had cosmetic treatments with laser, ultrasound, peels, facials or micro- dermabrasion.
-
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, Niacin supplement, high-sodium foods, high sugar foods, refined carbohydrates, spicy foods and cigarettes 24-48 hours before and after your treatment. These items may contribute to increased swelling or irritation.
Post Treatment
What’s normal after this procedure?
Due to the anesthetic found in many fillers, you may feel numbness or tingling immediately after the procedure. Mild to moderate swelling, redness, bruising, or tenderness can also be expected. Mild, non-painful swelling can last or up to 2 weeks. Bruising is usually visible immediately, then more obvious the following day before fading over the next 7 to 14 days. A small minority of bruises can last 4-6 weeks.
How to protect your results and reduce side effects.
-
Cold compresses may be used immediately after treatment to reduce swelling. Do not apply ice as this can cause injury. Extreme heat i.e. sauna, steam, hot showers, and strenuous exercise should be avoided for 48 hours.
-
Avoid touching the treated areas for six (6) hours following treatment. Makeup can be applied the following day after treatment.
-
Avoid unnecessary pressure over the treated areas, especially within the first 24 hours after treatment. Do not firmly massage the injection sites or undergo any skin resurfacing until the area has healed fully (approximately 2 weeks).
-
If lips or areas around the mouth have been treated, avoid dental work for 2 weeks.
